The one thing about Special Education Services is there are a lot of acronyms!! While there are many letters in each of the acronyms, they are all important. The acronym IPRC stands for Identification Placement Review Committee.
Identification: Means the exceptionality your child has been designated as outlined by the Ministry Of Education.
Placement: Means the type of classroom setting your child will be placed in. For example in a typical/regular classroom or an Intensive Support Program (ISP another acronym) or the most appropriate educational setting.
Review: Means the committee reviews the supports that are currently in place for your child to see if support needs to be increased or decreased. Based on their review of the documentation and hearing from the rest of the committee, recommendations are made.
Committee: Is the panel of at least 3 people (a principal, psychologist, someone from special education and parents) who make recommendations based on their review. Parents are essential members of the committee providing valuable insights about their child.
At this time of year IPRC reviews are school based (which includes parents, principal and special education) and occur for students who are transitioning, primarily middle school to high school. They are important meetings (for parents to attend ) during these transitions to ensure the appropriate program and school selection for your child.
